Exmouth likely to host US space defence base
As reported in The West Australian on October 30 2010.
Australia will become a key partner in the international battle for space supremacy, with WA to host a new multi-million-dollar US defence base to spy on foreign satellites and keep watch on dangerous space junk.
It is understood the base is likely to be built at the top secret Harold E. Holt naval communications station at Exmouth.
The base will play a key role in an emerging Cold War in space. It will have important technology and intelligence spin-offs, putting Australia at the forefront of a battle between nations staking claims for territory in space.
US Defence Secretary Robert Gates is poised to announce the base when he visits Australia with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in early November.
